Johnny Depp and his Duesenberg Alliance Guitar

Johnny Depp the musician

Musician is certainly not the capacity that most people know Johnny Depp, the three time Academy Award nominee who immortalized Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carebians; Tim Burton’s favorite actor of Edwards Scissorhands, Willy Wonka from remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Sweeney Todd. But if you are a guitarist, and ever watched Chocolat, after the scene at the river where Depp’s character plays some gypsy jazz, you definitely started to wonder if they put a guitarist body double in the movie or Johnny Depp is a hell of a guitar player.

To cut a long story short, he is definitely the latter. He is not only a player, he is a hell of a musician who earned the respect not only of his peers in Hollywood but also the respect of the most noted rock stars and producers that ever walked the face of the earth.

Let’s take, for example, T-Bone Burnett. If you don’t know him, his accomplishments as a producer could fill up a novel. They are simply too long to list here. But look them up on wikipedia. One of his recent projects was to recruit some of the best musicians in the world to produce songs out of the hand-written notes, lyric fragments written by Bob Dylan that only recently surfaced. The project was called the New Basement Tapes and the first single of the project was the song Kansas City sung by Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons. He wrote the music with Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. If you watch the video, which is no more than a documentary of the studio recording session, you will notice this Johnny Depp looking character sporting a blue Duesenberg starplayer with white racing stripes. That is, in fact, Johnny Depp playing the Duesenberg signature model of Mike Campbell (member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).

For the past few years, Johnny Depp had a band that can only be described as All Star: the Hollywood Vampires. Formed in 2015, the band consists of Alice Cooper, Joe Perry of Aerosmith and Johnny Depp. Touring members include or have included Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses and Robert DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots.

When asked about Depp, Joe Perry and Alice Cooper are quite tired of having to defend the most famous member of the band who reached his celebrity in another genre. Perry says that people who see Depp play will quickly forget the actor or the characters he played. He is simply a natural who is, as evidenced by that Chocolat performance, is well versed in more musical styles than Perry himself. Depp did not move to California to become an actor. He moved there to make it big with his band. On the side he started getting acting gigs and turned out to be quite a talent. The music did not end up happening for the band, maybe because of a lack of luck or because Depp quickly became too busy with the acting, but Alice Cooper pointed out it certainly was not because of a lack of talent of the guitarist. In fact, Depp is currently playing and touring with, none other than, Jeff Beck. Arguably (as Joe Perry certainly argued in an interview) the best guitarist in the world.

Born the Johnny Depp Duesenberg Limited Edition Guitar

Johnny Depp does not have to play Mike Campbell’s signature Duesenberg anymore. He has his own Duesenberg signature model. It is a chambered body, single trapezoid shape single coil pickup, with an aluminium top plate which is engraved with tattoos from Depp’s body. Today’s production model was created after a very successful limited run of 52 guitars. The guitar’s body is a hallowed American alder with an Ash top. The custom JD-63 pickup was designed to have an open T-style sound with a second tap adding an extra 1963 coil winds (Depp’s birth year) for a rocking P-90 feel. Continuing the Duesenberg tradition, the guitar also sports a top of the line classic Diamond Deluxe Tremola.
