1968 Gibson EB-2 bassguitar

I had the opportunity to set up a 1968 Gibson EB-2 bass that came to the Stageshop Workbench in excellent condition. A true rarity. In fact, between 1958 and 1972 while this model was in production, only 8017 were made.

The body is partially hollow. In essence, it is the bass version of the ES335. It is equipped with one, so called, sidewinder humbucker. The bridge has muters built in. This instrument also comes with a baritone switch, which is essentially a high pass filter that borrows an upright acoustic bass like tone to this electric bass.

The bridge muter is in line with the manufacturing period’s musical expectations. I seriously doubt anyone uses one of these regularly today. Still, it is a cool design and works wonderfully if a muted sound is what one wants.

The instrument itself is in excellent condition considering its age. I was able to set it up perfectly. The body is full of the hairline cracks that are caused by humidity fluctuations.
